Karate practiced for thousands of years
People have been known to practice martial arts for several thousands of years. There have been several reasons why people practice martial arts. However, the reasons might have changed and evolved over the years, but the art remains the same. In times of war, the fighting skills learned from karate were considered the major reason to train. However, in times of peace, character development and health took precedence to give us the competition side of karate, which has been huge.
It appears that modern day karate would go into one or a combination of four directions such as self-defence, fitness, health and character development and competition training.
The self-defence aspect of karate has been plain to see, but if the karateka, person who practices karate, does not train with the right attitude, it would not matter how many moves they have learnt, or for how long they have been training, they would be ineffective in a real-time situation.
The physical gains gained by practicing karate have been apparent. Karate has been very anaerobic. It consists of short explosive bursts. A majority of karate teacher or sensei would advise their students for complimenting their karate with aerobic exercises. These exercises have been swimming, running, walking and cycling. Many karate dojo or training hall incorporates the philosophy that one should not practice karate for fitness only; rather, people should be fit to practice karate. This has been a very confusing philosophy for people new to karate. However, as time passes, the karateka would understand and appreciate this philosophy.
In order to develop one’s character, a majority of karate schools would teach their students with positive human attributes such as perseverance, achievement, humility dedication, effort, courtesy, discipline and respect.
Competition arenas have been a great place to test your karate skill, but without causing injury to yourself or for that matter, to others. Several important areas of karate would be tested in a competition such as reactions, spirit, balance, distance, timing and speed.
A majority of karateka would not agree with competition, as they believe that if someone has a bad character, the competition would only make things worse. However, some karateka would show disrespect to their opponents, referees and instructors, but most karateka at competition would show humility and respect regardless they win or lose.
